I’ve just finished watching ‘Samurai X: Reflection’ and I’m at a loss for words… What a masterpiece! The greatest anime ending I’ve ever seen.
Never before have I been so compelled by a series conclusion, nor so moved. The storyline offers an integrity and bluntness, which is, though painful, refreshingly honest are real. There is no happy ending. No resolution. No purification of Kenshin’s tainted soul. Sticking true to the real essance of humanity this series focuses on what is real instead of what would be perhaps considered a more satisfactory finale. It shows that in life there are no black and whites. Kenshin was not a faultless human being and yet he relentless strove for atonement until his death. Only at the end of his life could he find the solace that had for years evaded him.
What could be more true? That much – suffering, regret along with our endless quest to become the best we can possibly be – is a perfect testament of the human condition.
In a word: breathtaking.
